The Sacred Borobudur

Borobudur is the largest temple in the world. This temple is one of the wonder of the world heritage. Meaning of the name Borobudur is "a monastery in the hills", which comes from the word "coal" in Sanskrit means "temple or monastery" and "beduhur" in Balinese language means "a hill or high place."

Borobudur was built around 800 BC in the golden era under the reign of Samaratungga and it aims to uphold and glorify the Mahayana Buddhism. This temple for centuries are no longer used. Then, due to volcanic eruptions, most of the buildings covered with volcanic soil. The building was also overgrown with trees and shrubs for centuries.

In the year 1814 when the British occupied Indonesia, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles heard about the discovery of huge historical heritage in the village of Magelang district Bumisegoro. Because interest in the history of Java, then he immediately ordered the Raffles HC Cornelius, a Dutch engineer, to investigate the location of the discovery that the time was a hill covered with shrubs.

Cornelius assisted by around 200 people cut down trees and remove undergrowth that covers the building giant. Since this discovery, Raffles was awarded as the person who started the restoration of Borobudur and the world's attention. In 1835, the entire area of the temples have been discovered. This temple is stored on the restored Dutch colonial period.

Borobudur temple is located in Magelang, Central Java, about 40 km from Yogyakarta. Borobudur Temple has 10 levels consisting of six square levels, three levels of circular ring and a main stupa as a peak. At every level there are several stupas. Overall there are 72 stupas in addition to the main stupa. In each of the stupa there is a statue of Buddha. This giant building in the form of giant stone blocks which have a total height of 42 meters. The base of Borobudur size of approximately 118 m on each side. Stones used as approximately 55.000 cubic meters. Borobudur temple has 2670 different relief.

Every each form of Borobudur Temple has a meaning,
1. The number of levels in the Borobudur temple depict 10 spiritual level
odhisattva or Dasabhumi. Dasabhumi the Mahayana doctrine.
2. Candi Borobudur like seven lotus symbolizes the purity and describe
the miracles of Sidhartha shortly after birth.
3. Relief of Borobudur temple, the book tells about the contents of the nine
Dharma in the Buddhist religion.
